Fun Exercise

You'all know I'm a sucker for a good workout.  I've done the gym, spin classes, boot camp style classes and jogging/walking...all in the name of keeping in shape so that I can keep up with my goslings.  For the past few weeks, I've been walking with a good friend I've been friends with for about 25 years.  We meet up at the high school early in the morning (7:00 a.m.) - yes I know some of you may not think that 7:00 a.m. is "early," but "early" is all in how you look at it, and for me that's EARLY!

We usually, walk a lap (0.25 mile) and then do a set of stadiums (which is up and down two times).  Lately we've even been adding in squats, lunges, push-ups, tricep dips and a little ab work.  We're getting up to about 2.5 miles in an hour.  Including our little circuit. We've even talked about doing a half marathon in November.  I know, we're getting crazy! LOL!

There is a group of ladies that I've known my whole life that have always gotten up and walk every morning at 5:30.  They would walk past where Daddy Goose and I used to live and every once in a while, if I was awake, I'd hear them chatting, chuckling and enjoying their exercise.  It always brought a half smile to my face (Only half a smile, cause lets face it...its 5:30 a.m.! Hee-hee!)

It's been so fun.  We get to chat AND exercise.  What more could you ask for?  A workout buddy who is super fun to talk to!!  I totally get what that group of ladies experiences.

BUT...on my way home this morning, I was thinking about what I was going to do when my friend goes back to work in a few weeks (she gets summers off) and Brother starts school or Daddy Goose goes back to work.  Will we get up and exercise at 5:30 a.m.?  Or walk in the afternoons when she gets off work?  Or will we just walk on the weekends?  I haven't even talked to her about it, but already I'm getting bummed.  I don't wanna stop our daily walks.  We gotta figure this one out!

For now, we'll keep up our walks and talks and enjoy the cool summer mornings while getting our exercise on!

Do you have an exercise buddy?  Studies have shown that those who do, workout more.  So, if you don't...you better find one! :)

Happy New Year 2013

Well, here it is a "year" since my last post! (Har-har-har!) I cannot believe time has passed so quickly.  The entire month of December is now a blur.  A fun and exciting blur!  Daddy Goose survived another peak-season at UPS, I survived another peak-season as a UPS wife, our goslings had a great Christmas, we got to see my entire family and we just wrapped up a weekend in the snow with my in-laws.  Yup, I'd say it was a pretty successful holiday season.

With all of the "hoopla" (as Daddy Goose would say) of the holiday, I have missed my nightly "de-briefing" or blogging session.  I haven't had the time, the energy and frankly the words to write over the past few weeks.  It was an unexpected, but needed blogging hiatus.

This time of year brings me feelings of new beginnings, fresh starts and clean slates. I’m fairly certain others feel it too and that’s why millions use this time of year to quit doing something, start doing something to be a better ** you fill in the blank.  As the new year crept up on me, I began thinking of what I'd like to resolve to do differently in 2013.  Which is a little funny because I’ve taken on the attitude that if you're going to make a change...why wait?  Do it now!

The one resolution I kept coming up with was to get back to blogging.  However, I decided it was one resolution I WAS going to wait to fulfill until January 1st.  I just needed a little more time.  For what, I don’t know.

And now…here I am, 10:45 p.m., Wednesday night, pajamas on, hot tea handy, computer problems and all…blogging and happy!

What about you, are you making New Year’s Resolutions?  What about those ½ Year Resolutions we made?  Are you keeping up with them?

1/2 Year Resolution - Check Up

Can you believe it's been over two months since we made our 1/2 year resolutions?  My 1/2 year resolutions were to:
  • Drink more water each day.
  • Be more consistent about jogging/exercising.
  • Find new ways to show Daddy Goose how much I appreciate his hard work.
  • Be more patient of and forgiving to those who hurt me.
I am doing OK.  Resolutions are always a hard thing to keep, don't you think?  Just as hard in July, August and September as they are in January.  The one that I've been great about is drinking more water each day.

I thought it was a good time to check in with you so we can all redirect and re-concentrate our efforts!  It's not that I (or maybe you) haven't done these things.  It's just that checking in and keeping ourselves accountable is a great way to keep from fizzling out.

Sooooo.....how are your 1/2 year resolutions going? (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, look here.) How are some of the ways you've reminded or motivated yourself over the past two months about your resolutions?  I've now got mine printed and on my desk.

I can't wait to hear how you're doing!

Healthy Living Tip #4: Exercise 20 Minutes a Day at Home

I have a hard time getting up before the sun rises to exercise and once my day is started there are goslings, dishes, laundry, errands, doctors appointments...my list of excuses goes on and on. There is a gym in my town, but its hours aren't early enough or late enough to make it really feasible for me to go and they don't have daycare. The nearest gym with the right hours and/or daycare is 25 minutes away, so making that trip would take at least two hours of my day. Adding a two-hour trip to the gym, not going to happen. What about you? What are your reasons for not exercising?

According to the article, 10 Habits of Healthy Families, all we need is 20 minutes a day! How many of us can truly say that we don't have 20 minutes to spare in our day? Even with all of my excuses above I can't think of an actual good reason not to spare 20 minutes.  We can all spare 20 minutes.

Here are my new excuses: I know that my goslings would love to jump rope with me in the front yard for 20 minutes. I know that my goslings would love to walk around the neighborhood for 20 minutes. I know that my goslings would love to chase me around at the park for 20 minutes.

What's great about my new excuses? It makes getting and staying healthy a team approach AND I bet we will be having so much fun "exercising" that it will last longer than 20 minutes!

What about you?  Got any new excuses TO exercise?

My New Years Resolution

Okay, okay so I know I'm a little late with this topic.  But, if you know me, I don't seem to do many things "on time."  I will probably be late to my own funeral. (Isn't that how the joke goes?)

I once read that most people give up on their New Years resolution by January 22.  Seriously!!  That's only 21 days...3 weeks!! (Although, you know no one starts their diet on New Years Day.  It's always on Jan. 2) Have you ever quit your resolution before the end of January?  It's okay to admit....I have totally given up before the end of January.

I'd like to suggest a redo of our resolutions.  Sunday, July 1, marked exactly halfway through 2012. (I'm even a little late for July 1st...but better late than never, right??) So, let's start over.  Either rev up your enthusiasm for the resolutions you made six months ago or make new commitments. 1/2 Year Resolutions.  Maybe success won't be as hard because the hype and pressure of the New Year is gone.  I honestly could not come up with any resolutions at the beginning of the year, but this time I am prepared.  Here are my 1/2 Year resolutions:

  • Drink more water each day.
  • Be more consistent about jogging/exercising.
  • Find new ways to show Daddy Goose how much I appreciate his hard work.
  • Be more patient of and forgiving to those who hurt me.

  • Are you ready to do this?  I will help you, will you help me? We need accountability partners to make this work. If its not me, find someone who will help you stick with it.

Good luck with your 1/2 Year Resolutions! Let's check-in frequently to make sure we're succeeding.
